BEN bOSTETER

DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF UNCANNY

“I truly believe in that idea of making things that YOu want to see. It’s not out there, yet. So go make it.”

Ben Bosteter is a filmmaker whose work quietly unsettles and lingers, shaped by a lifelong fascination with what lies beneath the surface. His vision is deeply influenced by a wide and haunting range of artists from the atmospheric tension of Kiyoshi Kurosawa and the psychological precision of Jordan Peele, to the cerebral horror of John Carpenter and David Cronenberg, and the liminal dreamscapes of David Lynch. He draws just as much from the unsettling imagery and concepts of Junji Ito, the primal emotion of Francis Bacon, and the nightmarish worlds of Zdzisław Beksiński. These influences, among others, form the eerie and introspective foundation of Bosteter’s artistic voice. His early creative instincts were steeped in cosmic horror, the paranormal, and the occult; interests that cast a long, thoughtful shadow over his worldview. He began his artistic journey in practical effects, where he sculpted, molded, and painted prosthetics, designed props and Halloween masks, and honed the craft of bringing the unreal to life with his hands. Over time, he came to see directing and filmmaking as a way to bring together the threads of his varied passions -visual design, storytelling, atmosphere- into a larger, more collaborative whole. In recent years, Ben founded Uncanny, a production company that reflects his quiet commitment to the eerie and the offbeat. With Uncanny, he’s begun cultivating a space to create work that’s evocative and strange, pushing at the edges of genre and expectation to uncover something deeper.
